Arthur Hercz papers, 1888-1994.

Correspondence and newsclippings relating to buildings or interiors designed by Arthur Hercz, a Chicago architect; scripts, musical scores, costume and scenery sketches, and programs for pageants and festivals designed or directed by Hercz; essays; articles; condolence letters to Hercz's family after his death (1941), and other items. The pageants often portrayed German, German American, or American patriotic themes. Essays by Hercz concern the architecture of the Century of Progress International Exposition (1933-34) and architecture of the Chicago Steuben Club. An essay (ca. 1994) by Hercz's son, Arthur R. Hercz, describes his childhood in the Lincoln Park neighborhood (near 2700 Pine Grove Avenue) and shops, transportation, recreation, ethnic relations, and itinerant salesmen, ca. 1912-16. The collection also includes articles (in German) by Hercz's father-in-law Hermann Raster, 1888-89. Included are materials for these pageants and exhibitions: "Festspiel" of the Germania Mannerchor (1900), dedication ceremonies for the Altenheim in Forest Park (1914), "Humanitaet" festival (1914), "Mai est" (1915), "Weihnachts Markt" (1916), "dunes Pageant" (1917), "Illinois Centennial Pageant" (1918), "All-American Exposition (1919), 75th anniversary celebration for Chicago Turn-Verein (1927), anniversary celebration for Columbia Woman's Club (1933), the musical comedy, "Heaven and Hades," "The Romance of Chicago" for the Century of Progress International Exposition (1933, planned but not performed), and "Fight for Democracy" (planned but not performed). Some musical scores are by Paul Galico and G. Paoli and lyrics by Anna Hercz.
